Lawsuit Filed Against Avenal Regional Landfill

AVENAL, CA (September 25, 2026) — Residents of Avenal have filed a lawsuit against Waste Connections, US, Inc., and Madera Disposal Systems, Inc., for the ongoing environmental disaster at the Avenal Regional Landfill. The Avenal Landfill is just 500 feet from the nearest residence, with the entire town of 14,000 people living within 1.5 miles of the site, and is yet another example of elevated surface temperatures posing urgent risks to the health and safety of nearby residents.

The noxious odors and toxic gases caused residents, all of whom live in the surrounding City and neighborhoods, to experience headaches, nosebleeds, respiratory issues, and heart problems, amongst other harms. Residents are forced to stay inside their homes and forgo using their yards to avoid the noxious odors and attendant health effects.

The Avenal community has been advocating for environmental justice and speaking out about the Avenal Landfills’ impact on the community.  Avenal leaders have joined communities from across the state fighting for increased regulations and resources to communities impacted by man-made environmental disasters.
